Turris Libisonis (Sardinia-Italy)

Turris Libisonis (source: Archivio Turris Bisleonis)

Turris Libisonis, modern Porto Torres, is situated on the north-west part of Sardinia. The city was called Colonia Iulia by the Roman writer Plinius and therefore probably founded by Julius Caesar as a new Roman city without an older predecessor.

A main road connected the harbour with Carales (Cagliari). The modern harbour of Porto Torres is based on Roman foundations. There are remains of a temple dedicated to Fortuna, baths, a basilica, and an aqueduct. The cult of Isis is documented. The skippers of Turris Libisonis had an office at the Piazzale delle Corporazioni in Ostia (statio 19).
