Thapsus, modern Bakalta, was a harbour city on the east coast of Tunisia. Nearby were salt pans. Thapsus actually had two harbours: Portus Pristinus, located in a natural shelter, and the main port, sheltered by one of the longest ancient breakwaters (1100 metres long) in the Mediterranean Sea.
