Pompeii

pompei thumbAlso the city of Pompei, situated on the mouth of the Sarnum river, was equipped with a harbour. According to some scientists even two harbours. Although the city is besides Rome the most wellknown ancient city in Italy, few people are aware of Pompeii as a Roman port city. In every story, film or book about the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD they tell that people were fled  to the harbour. Even one of the city gates is also called the Porta Marina (sea gate), but despite the extensive research of the past decades to find the exact location of the port, up till today that location is still  uncertain.
