Tunisia → near tunis → Utica

Utica, some 30 kms to the west of Tunis, was built near the mouth of the river Medjerda. Due to silting the remains are now inland.

Utica is a latinization of the Punic name, meaning ‘old town’, as opposed to Carthage, meaning ‘new town’. Utica preceded Carthage as capital of Africa Proconsularis. Extensive archaeological remains can be seen.
